Chapter 22
Felicia and Tiffany sat mannequin still on Aisha’s couch. It was Saturday, their day off, a rarity. Ever since they had gotten the KBS account a day off had become about as nonexistent as an honest man. This was Felicia’s first time seeing her sister since early yesterday, before Aisha went out to dinner with Lance, and she looked horrible. Her normally lush chocolate skin was gray, her hair stood up in spikes around her head, and even her sweatpants were ragged, a no-no for Aisha. Usually even in sweatpants she made shabby look chic.
Aisha nervously tapped her pen against her yellow pad. All morning, after she had finished cursing Derrick out, was spent thinking of ways to tell her sister and Tiffany that she had blown the KBS account. She saw the worry and fear in Felicia’s and Tiffany’s eyes.
“Thanks for stopping by. I-um-don’t-know-how-to-tell-y’all-this,” she stuttered and Felicia watched in amazement. Aisha was always on point. “But we—I mean I—lost the KBS account.”
A collective sharp gasp went up. “What happened?” Felicia asked quietly.
“Well, to be honest, Lance got pissed at me because I told him that he should give up his little ho and then he wanted me to participate in a ménage àtrois.”
“So he got mad at you. So what? Get over it. Don’t be a punk ass and cancel the contract!”
“People in Lance’s position do not get over it. They get even. So he ended the contract and I have to return all the money he had given us, less the services we provided.”
“How did this happen?” Tiffany wailed. She had already spent the bonus on late bills, and the raise was already calculated into her budget. Now she might lose her job.
Felicia patted Tiffany’s leg. “Can he do this?” she asked quietly.
“Yep. He put so many stipulations in his contract that if I had farted, he would’ve rescinded.”
“Why did you sign it?”
Aisha looked at her sister through narrowed eyes. “Why? It was a six-figure deal. This deal was going to put us on the map. I’m sorry that I let y’all down. I never should’ve slept with him,” she said, shaking her head.
“Can’t you call him?” Tiffany croaked, sniffling. Mascara made a river down her face to her chin.
Aisha patiently blew out a puff of air. “Lance doesn’t give second chances.”
“Please!” Tiffany begged.
“No. I’m not calling. We’ll deal with this,” she said forcibly. “And we will be okay, honest,” she promised with a glance to Tiffany. “It’s just a bump in the road.”
More like a mountain, Felicia thought. “Maybe you should think about closing FAACS. You could always go back to Corporate America.”
“Hell no! We’re not closing. This kind of stuff happens to small businesses all the time. We’re okay for the next five months or so. After that …” She shrugged her arms. “But I do have some good news,” she announced.
“What?” Tiffany grumbled.
“There’s a grant that I can apply for. It’s for minority women business owners. When we get it, it will save us.
